Earth Hour: A global call to action

WWF’s Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when over 2 million individuals and 2,000 businesses turned off their lights for one hour to take their stand against climate change. By March 2009, hundreds of millions of people in over 4,000 cities and towns in 88 countries officially switched off for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour 2010 was even bigger, taking place in a record 128 countries and territories. Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, the Las Vegas Strip, Victoria Falls and Beijing’s Forbidden City were among more than 1500 iconic landmarks that switched off to show their support.

Earth Hour 2011 will take place on Saturday 26 March 2011 and will continue to be a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community. A call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way to a sustainable future.

Why get involved?

Put simply, because our future depends on it! Earth Hour has done a lot to raise awareness of climate change issues. But there’s more to it than switching off your lights for one hour once a year. It’s all about giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low carbon future.
